Tour de Grorgia scrapped

The 2009 edition of the Tour de Georgia has been cancelled after the United States' highest-profile cycling event failed to secure a sponsor for a second-straight year.

The decision not to race next year was announced on the website of the organising committee, who claimed the 2008 event was a success and that the event can return stronger in the future.

"We have decided to use 2009 as a time to plan ahead and properly position the Tour de Georgia to make the best use of the new partnerships we forged during the 2008 Tour de Georgia Presented by AT&T, such as our relationships with Blue Cross Blue Shield and Road Atlanta," said director Tom Saddlemire.
